Prevent Colon Cancer with March’s Healthy Meal Plan

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, bringing a close to the long, cold days of winter and ushering in spring with all its lushness. For those of us tired of potatoes and longing for more color and variety in our fresh fruit and vegetable selections, we are in luck — and just in time for Colon Cancer Awareness Month!

Colon Cancer Awareness Month was started in 2000 by President Bill Clinton with the aim to promote screening for early detection and educate people on colon cancer prevention. Exercise and eating a high-fiber diet with lean proteins, whole grains, and low in saturated fats is key. Aim to eat from the rainbow this month by incorporating fruits and veggies of every color into your diet.

In March, we can enjoy the following of fruits and vegetables in season:

  • Asparagus
  • Avocado
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Citrus (Clementine, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Tangerine)
  • Greens (Arugula, Kale, Lettuce, Spinach, Swiss Chard)
  • Leeks
  • Mushrooms
  • Parsnips
  • Peas
  • Radishes
  • Sweet Potatoes

This month let’s welcome in spring and prevent colon cancer by trying some new colon-healthy recipes from our March Meal Plan.
