In the United States, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men after lung and prostate and the third most common in women after lung and breast. Yet it is the second leading cause of death from cancer.
According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2009, an estimated 106,100 new cases of colon cancer and 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer occurred. Nearly 50,000 people are expected to die of colon and rectal cancer in 2009.
